ONE WEEK INTO OUR FILM FORUM RUN AND STILL GOING STRONG

Last week we spent most of our time running from one press engagement to another, passing out postcards, introducing the film and answering questions at Q&As. Its been a long and exhausting week for us, but pretty amazing and nothing to complain about!

So far the reviews and reaction to the film have been way beyond our expectations! Everyone at Film Forum and Kino Lorber have been great – supportive, organized, on the ball, a pleasure to work with.

Amazing!! Incredible!! Over the last 5 years of making RADIO UNNAMEABLE, we often talked about our goals for the film. One of them was playing at Film Forum in New York City. It is a fantastic independent movie theater with great programming and the perfect audience for our film. Now we just have to make sure they come and see it! We’ve spent the last several weeks doing outreach, grassroots marketing and lining up press. The success and life of RADIO UNNAMEABLE is dependent on how well it does in New York. So if anyone is reading this, please come to Film Forum and tell your friends to tell their friends about the film.

BAMCinemaFest – Our New York Premiere

This is a New York story and we are New York filmmakers, so we always knew that our New York debut was going to be special, but this really blew our minds!!!

With hardly any press or outside promotion, our BAMCinemaFest screening sold out very quickly. So many people came out for the screening: friends, family, people we interviewed in the film, friends and fans of Bob and WBAI. Chris Koch, former program director, who was at the SilverDocs screening a few days before, drove up from Washington DC because he knew this was going to be a WBAI reunion. And it was!!

THE SCREENING:
The energy in during the screening of the film was palatable. It started with audience members booing BAM’s corporate sponsor The Wall Street Journal and continued throughout the film. The Q&A was probably the most entertaining we’d ever witnessed. People made testimonies to Bob, shouted greetings to their friends in the audience, solicited for money for WBAI, yelled at the solicitors, and on and on! Thelma Blitz filmed and posted the Q&A here, watch it for yourselves and see what I’m talking about.

THE AFTER PARTY:
We were so thrilled that Simeon Coxe from Silver Apples agreed to drive all the way from Alabama to perform at the after party in the BAM Lounge. Silver Apples is one of our favorite bands and has been an inspiration during the making of the film. Having Simeon and his music in the film was exciting enough but having him there to perform, was amazing and made the night even more special!!

This was a night we will always remember! It was so special in so many ways!

Fun at SilverDocs

Our screenings at SilverDocs Film Festival in Silver Springs, Maryland went a great. It was specially exciting that it was the first time Bob and Lynnie Fass had seen the film with an audience! The first screening on Saturday evening was at the AFI Silver Theater, a comfortable space and nice size room. The reception excellent, lots of interesting questions for us and Bob at the Q&A. We were happy that former WBAI station manager and interview in our film, Chris Koch was able to make it. It was the first time he and Bob had seen each other in about 40 years. It was quite the reunion!

Our second screening on Sunday was at the Round House Theatre, a black box performance space next door to the AFI Theaters. It was an equally good screening as Saturday but a better Q&A as Bob was more comfortable with the format and felt at ease with the audience. He was sharp and quick witted, kept the dialogue going, just like a pro! Afterwards we all went to a Festival party, it was nice to relax and unwind with other filmmakers and cocktails.

We were able to see a few films while we there. Its always a challenge at festivals to see everything you want to since you have obligations to promote your own work. But we were excited to be able to catch three films we enjoyed tremendously - Plimpton! produced by our friend Adam Roffman, Tchoupitoulas by Rick and Turner Ross, and Downeast by David Redmon and Ashley Sapin. David gave me an empty Beach Cliff sardine tin from the closed cannery they documented in the film. It is now proudly displayed on our bookshelf next to a can of Aquanet signed by John Waters!

In Competition at Silverdocs

We are thrilled to be heading to Washington DC for our first time at AFI Discover Silverdocs Documentary Film Festival in late June!!! We’ve heard great things about the festival and are very excited to be in competition at the festival. Bob and his wife Lynnie and their friend Caryl Ratner will be traveling down with us. This will be the first time they’ve seen the film with an audience. That should be pretty exciting!

New York Premiere at BAM Cinemafest with amazing after party

Tickets for our June 26th screening at BAM Cinemafest just went on sale today and we’ve already heard from a ton of people who will be coming to see the film. Friends, family plus many of people involved with the film. After 5 years of production on this New York film, there’s no better place to have our New York premiere!!

To make it even more fantastic, BAM will be hosting an after party for the film with a rare musical performance by Silver Apples. Simeon Coxe is interviewed in the film and has generously allowed us to use his incredible song “Oscillations“, and he’s coming all the way from Alabama for the event!

It is going to be crazy! A WBAI Reunion! A (hopefully) packed house! I am getting excited already!

WE WON!!! SPECIAL JURY PRIZE FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY!!!

We are thrilled and shocked to announce that we won the Special Jury Prize for Best Documentary Film at the Sarasota Film Festival!! We can’t believe it!!! We were in competition amongst some strong films so it was a total surprise when they announced our names. Sitting up in the top of the balcony of the Opera House, we had to run downstairs to accept the award. It took so long, they thought we weren’t there. But our friend Mike Tully shouted from the balcony “THEY’RE COMING!!!” I’m glad Paul was able to articulate a short speech. I was just in shock and could only muster a “Thank You”! All night long, people kept coming up to us on the street, relaying their congratulations. It was a good night for celebration!!
